Procedures

Liver Tumor Treatment (Embolization / Ablation)

Procedure Overview:
Liver tumor treatment using minimally invasive techniques involves either blocking the blood supply to the tumor (embolization) or destroying tumor cells using heat or cold (ablation).

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. The patient is given local anesthesia and mild sedation.
  2. A small incision is made, usually in the groin or wrist.
  3. A thin catheter is guided through blood vessels to the liver using imaging guidance.
  4. For embolization: tiny particles or drug-coated beads are injected to block blood flow to the tumor.
  5. For ablation: a probe is inserted directly into the tumor to destroy it using radiofrequency, microwave, or cryotherapy.
  6. The catheter or probe is removed, and pressure is applied to stop bleeding.

Recovery:

  • Typically same-day discharge or 1–2 days observation
  • Mild pain or fever may occur temporarily

Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)

Procedure Overview:
A minimally invasive treatment used to shrink uterine fibroids by cutting off their blood supply.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Local anesthesia and sedation are administered.
  2. A catheter is inserted through a small incision in the groin or wrist.
  3. Using X-ray imaging, the catheter is guided to the uterine arteries.
  4. Tiny embolic particles are injected to block blood flow to fibroids.
  5. Fibroids shrink over time due to lack of blood supply.
  6. The catheter is removed, and the incision is closed.

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: Same day or overnight
  • Cramping and mild discomfort for a few days

Varicocele Embolization Treatment

Procedure Overview:
A non-surgical treatment to block enlarged veins in the scrotum (varicocele), improving blood flow and relieving symptoms.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Patient receives local anesthesia and mild sedation.
  2. A catheter is inserted into a vein in the groin or neck.
  3. The catheter is guided to the affected testicular vein.
  4. Coils or a sclerosing agent are used to block the abnormal vein.
  5. Blood flow is redirected to healthy veins.
  6. The catheter is removed, and pressure is applied.

Recovery:

  • Same-day discharge
  • Return to normal activities within 24–48 hours

Thyroid Ablation Treatment

Procedure Overview:
A minimally invasive procedure used to treat thyroid nodules using heat (radiofrequency or laser ablation).

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Local anesthesia is applied to the neck area.
  2. A thin needle-like probe is inserted into the thyroid nodule under ultrasound guidance.
  3. Heat energy is delivered to destroy abnormal tissue.
  4. The treated tissue shrinks gradually over time.
  5. The probe is removed, and a small dressing is applied.

Recovery:

  • Usually outpatient procedure
  • Minimal discomfort and quick return to daily activities

Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE)

Procedure Overview:
A minimally invasive treatment for enlarged prostate (BPH) that reduces prostate size by blocking blood flow.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Local anesthesia and sedation are administered.
  2. A catheter is inserted through the groin or wrist artery.
  3. The catheter is guided to the prostatic arteries using imaging.
  4. Tiny particles are injected to block blood supply to the prostate.
  5. The prostate gradually shrinks, improving urinary symptoms.
  6. The catheter is removed, and the incision is closed.

Recovery:

  • Same-day discharge or short observation
  • Symptom improvement within weeks
